Dry Foods For Dogs And Cats
Worst Ingredients in Dry Dog and Cat Food
While most owners don't realize it, poor quality dry dog and cat food can make your pet sick and unhealthy over time. Many companies use cheap ingredients to make dog and cat food affordable.
Unfortunately, the inclusion of many unhealthy ingredients can lead to obesity, cancer and much more.
Some ingredients are used as fillers to replace natural proteins. They add empty calories without much nutritional content.
Other ingredients come from questionable sources and contain harmful additives or chemicals.
1- Meat products
One common term used on cheaper dry food labels is “meat by-products.” This often refers to meat by-products, which are ingredients that are considered unfit for human consumption. They can come from a variety of different sources, some of which include slaughterhouse waste, or meat of unclear origin. Since these meat by-products come from a variety of sources, manufacturers don’t have to provide details.
2-corn grains
Corn is another common ingredient that helps keep costs down. Corn and other similar crops are very cheap to grow and harvest. It is a filling alternative to natural meat protein, unfortunately, corn is not good for dogs to consume in large quantities, as a lifetime of corn consumption can be detrimental to your dog’s health.
3- Legumes
Grains are often thrown into the mix to save on production costs. Wheat, rice, and other grains can be difficult for dogs and cats to digest. Dogs don’t have molars to grind the grains. Additionally, these grains are often treated with a number of chemicals before harvest. These chemicals can slowly wear down and cause problems over the years.
4- Preservatives, dyes and other artificial ingredients
Unfortunately, many synthetic chemical ingredients are used in food formulations to make it cheaper. These ingredients are used to extend the shelf life of the product or to make it more attractive. In most cases, these ingredients are unnecessary.
There are more natural alternatives to achieve the same results, but many manufacturers avoid them due to costs.
